Battle Royale

Has anybody heard of (or maybe seen?) Battle Royale - a Japanese film on (limited) release in the UK? It's a bit like Lord of the Flies, except it's a bunch of teenage miscreants who are left on an island with a variety of weapons, their task being to be the sole survivor after three weeks - no doubt winning their freedom.....

I really want to see this film, but thanks to the film only showing a small number of cinemas (with no chance of it coming to my local multiplex) I will never see it on the big screen - a crying shame.

Fortunately, a friend has acquired a DVD version from Hong Kong (it's official, a Region 3 copy), so I'll be able to watch it soon! Seeing it on a TV screen is NOT as good as the cinema, but it will have to do, I guess.....

I read a few lines in a magzine about it. Thats all.:( I heard that when it comes to the uk it may be edited. It sounded interesting. Do you have any smaller cinemas near you? There is one near me thatlieks to play more arty films, not the newest mainstreme releases. If you have any cinemnas like that near you you could try asking them if they'd ever be interested in screening it. If you and a few other peopel ask them they might screen it or something.

Back to topic - surely the Hong Kong version will be in Chinese?! Or do they have an english option too since the UK used to own Hong Kong?

It could have subtitles or he's that desprate to watch it he doesn't mind the language difference. I've watched a few films in a different language, not as bad as you might think...then again they were action movies :D

Well, I haven't borrowed it YET, so I don't know about the subtitles..... BUT - the same person from whom I am borrowing the DVD also has "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon" from the same region (released long before it was available in the UK) and THAT features English subtitles (as well as Thai, Mandarin, Japanese, Vietnamese and more) - so, I am hopeful.....

:D Just finished watching Battle Royale and it is f:wave:king brilliant!!!!

Here's the deal: 42 students (an entire class chosen by a lottery) left on a deserted island equipped with random kit (even the weapons are random! what? no weapon in the bag? tough!), and just three days to eliminate everyone else, leaving a sole survivor who will be granted freedom.

The first student to die is told off for whispering at the briefing. The teacher whips out a knife....flings it at her.....and it lands.....bang in the middle of her forehead - ha! And the kids thought it was a joke! :rolleyes: That'll teach 'em!

This film is a must see ! :D

I don't know when this will get a UK/US DVD release (the copy I have borrowed is Region 3 - Hong Kong), what with it getting a cinematic release only recently...... If you can't see it at the cinema, buy the bloody thing when it's released on DVD or VHS (if you're living in the Stone Age).

Brilliant film! Seen it about 8 times and finaly got to buy the special edition dvd from virgin about 2 weeks ago. JUst waiting for IChi the killer to come out on special edition dvd....:D

And aye, it is a great film. One of my best. Each year they shove a class on an island and give them three days to kill each other off. If there is more than one person alive after the 3 days... they all die. They got this neck thingy on their neck which blows up... :thumb:

It's subtitles, and it's a damn must see.


Also, just to point out. EVERYONE gets a weapon. But chances are, they won't be any good. One person got a gun, the other got a frying pan :lol:
