/me wonders why his link to /. (http://science.slashdot.org/article.pl?sid=03/02/01/1442213&mode=nested&tid=160) got edited out :wtf:. It's not as if /. is going to steal any traffic, and there are lots of informative comments attached amongst the 700-odd replies :wtf: .

'tis a tragedy :(
If people start saying its due to terrorists I will punch them :wtf:
Scud missiles dont reach that high and i doubt saddam/OBL have anything that can :wtf: It's just because people cant accept the fact they ****ed up somewhere and are using terrorism as a scapegoat.

Oh, thanks for the info everybody. I started watching it after it started and they didn't say what was going on! Poor NASA, that can't be good.

It's getting tiring to hear about on the news..
I don't mean to be heartless, or seem that way, but it's not a God-awful incident, as these kind of things just.. happen. Technology is still unstable, yet we want to colonize space.. >_>
.. And what about those mass-deaths you never hear about on the news? War tragedies? Have they just gotten old to the point that they don't matter to us much anymore? Or are they just "expected" too?

:( Is a tradegy..My heart goes out to the families of those people....Not being deemed a terrorist act..It was too high up for missiles.....A TRAGIC accident..Can't blame any group of people for that one!!!!!
Ok, there was nothign foriegn that hit the shuttle at mach 17 I think. There is nothing that dam fast. But when the shuttle launced a few weeks ago, a piece hit the left wing while launching.

Well, both NASA and an independent group are going over everything....At the time it hapenned they froze the comps at NASA and turned them all over for inspection and dissection....So perhaps we will find out after all......Unfortunately too late for the Crew of Columbia.............................:(

Its sad that it happened...whats worse that it was 16 mins from landing.
im never going to be astraunaut
IMO, i think its a stupid comment to make. If it was like that, dont fly coz planes crash, dont go on a train, it will derail, dont go in a bus or anyother road vehicles coz accidents happen all day. Sometimes things happen, and fools use that as an excuse. I dont know if u wanted to be an astronaut before the incident, but if yes, and now u dont want to become one, good for the others coz with ur attitude, your crew would fear death more than concentrate on the mission.

My aunt was at kennedy space center in florida :D waiting for the shuttle to return, but it didn't,
Nasa released this statment: " during take off, we saw when the thrust booster thing( forgot name of it) came off as usual, but it took a little piece of the left wing off, we had no idea the effect it would bring, so we paid no attechen to it, at 8:45 the columbia, was over Las Angles, comming into the earth's atmosphere, and at 9:17 was scheduled to land, but at 9:27 it was over Fort Worth/ Dallas Texas, where a hugh sonic boom was heard. when the space shuttle columbia came into the earth's atmosphere, at around 9, nasa lost comunication with the ship, but to us them, that was normal, 10 mins later at 9:10, they lost tracking of the ship, and went into emergency. At 9:27, the boom was heard and flames and pieces were falling on to the ground to more than 200 miles away, in the gulf of mexico, and in west Luisianna.
All of this happened just 4 days after the aniversary, of the lady my school is named after, Christa McAulliffe, and her un successful trip to space.
no one can blame nasa for what happened compared to the challenger, seeing as, the challenger blew up on takeoff and the columbia blew up on landing. President bush has stated all space travelingand anything to deal with it shall not continue untill precise reason is found."
i changed some words around, because i didn't know how to spell them, and i typed this whole thing in 12 mins.
i pray for the families and the souls that were lost in this horrific accident.
may we have a moment of silence for them and their families?

It is sad. I feel sad for the people who have rumaged for shuttle parts that have randomly scattered and are already selling them on e-bay. Horrible events.:(

I don't mean for this to sound like a bad thing but I would not mind having a part of that shuttle, for rememberance purposes ONLY of course. If some sicko wants to buy a part just to say "Hey look guys! I got a part of the Columbian shuttle!" all happy-like that's his/her damn problem. But yeah that does not surprise me they stopped that on ebay, too many people getting pissed I'm assuming. I swear if anyone says it was a terrorist act I would freekin' kick their ass, that's so stupid some people thought that. How is that even possible? It didn't even LOOK like anything hit it, and they got tight security around those launching pads so no one would have been able to put a bomb-like device in the shuttle before they took off. It disintegrated, end of story. R.I.P. Columbian shuttle crew.:(

i hate that damn show lol,the shuttle was doing mach 25,thats 25 times the speed of sound.
As much as it's a tragedy, I can't help but think how this affects the Space program. We need to get off this rock.

Same here, I'm sure the families of the people who lost their lives in that tragedy would rather not have this relived every time they read a paper or turn on the telly. :wtf:
Did I already say I hope this won't affect our Space exploration?
Of course, it's a tragedy. But accidents happen.
Not that I'm trivialising it...
