Do any of you know anything about home networking? I need to network my house, and the options are wireless and phone line. Could you give me the pros and cons of each? And what you think the price would be to network 3 computers? Thanks

I'm just bumping this up to the top of the page, because I really need an answer.
My dad set up a rudimentary Two-Computer network.
I'm sure he'd tell you how, if he wasn't dead.
Unfortunately, I don't know how he did it. As far as I know, he just stuck a bit of Co-Ax into the back of both of them.
I know there's more to it than that, but I don't know what.
Sorry.

As long as you don't want a network as complicated as ours (One PDC (Primary Domain Controller) and two BDCs (Backup DCs), 2 hubs, loads of servers, two 'web sites', two ftp things, SAMBA, one HP JetDirect, two IRC servers and a CS server) it should be easy :D.
10-BaseT cable (probably)
A compatible hub
Compatible network cards
Then just set up the stuff in Windoze... Get the first stuff tho b4...

u run a CS server? whats the ip of your server?
the windows me networking assistant isn't all that reliable :D if u got XP by any chance u can do networking without the need for cables!
it someone detects all computers within a certain distance with the compatible ... thingy :wtf:

My CS server isn't public, it's not on the net.

No dave, we need a cable free network. This means either wireless or phone line. We can't wire our whole house for this.

arrrrrrrrrrghhhhhh dont even go there lol just kidding u need a couple of firewire NIC cards and someone that knows where there going with fire wire there aint really much alternative if u want wire free networking but in the long run its the cost ! firewire dont come cheap =( best solution is do a search on wireless peer to peer networking other than that its go for cable and try to hide it under the rug or along the edge of the floorboards or something ??! i have 2 puters networked with 10/100 base crossover cable and two NIC cards =) took bloody ages to sort out how to do it with WIN98 SE =( sposed to be easier in ME or XP or 2000 !? but works a treat =) some people ive spoke to about firewire say its ok but prone to interference and noise making the signals weak or corrupt so loss of data !? so its really only useful for short bursts of data or small amounts ask in yer local PC store or search the net with a good search engine like google or altavista =)

It also depends on why you want to network.
As this board is games orientated, is it to play head to head?
If so, a simple null-modem or lap-link com port cable is all that's required. I use this set-up between mine and my son's and it works a treat.
If you want to create a 'proper' peer to peer network, then nics are the answer. about £20 or so - one for each computer. Data transfer won't be at lightening speed, but for most applications it will work just fine.
