That blasted Bandicoot is crashing back towards PS2 and Xbox later this year, VU Games announced today. Crash Bandicoot: Unlimited is currently in development at Traveller's Tales and aims to reinvigorate the series with a new dual-character mechanic and creative input from Jordan Reichek of Ren & Stimpy fame.

Series fans will be pleased (or perhaps puzzled) to hear that Crash this time teams up with his long-time nemesis Dr. Cortex in order to save the world from a new threat - The Evil Twins. Rather like Crystal Dynamics' pairing of Redmond and Spanx in Whiplash, Crash and Cortex can be controlled as one unit, allowing Crash to use Cortex as a weapon. We're also told to expect co-operative level design that plays on the new relationship between the two.

Other key changes in the Crash formula include streaming worlds with no load times, and a playable role for the evil doctor's niece Nina Cortex, and of course - surprise, surprise - improved AI, with enemies who aim to hunt you down and run away when outgunned.

Oh, and in case you've seen US reports calling this one something else, Crash Bandicoot: Unlimited is the game's European identity.
