An England fan was stabbed to death in Lisbon when a pickpocket targeted fans celebrating England's victory over Croatia in the Euro 2004 tournament.

Witnesses said the killer struck as hundreds of fans were toasting England's triumph.

Portuguese police said a Ukrainian man was being held in connection with the killing. The victim was named by sources as Stephen Smith, 28, from Wolverhampton, West Midlands

Haskell Noah, 35, a delivery driver from Golders Green, north west London, said: "It was about four in the morning and there were about 200 England fans sitting around at tables having a drink and a laugh.

"This guy had been coming up and down for hours trying to take people's wallets and everyone was fed up with him. We'd been telling the police about him but they didn't do anything.

"An England guy pushed him away, he went away and came back about two minutes later and went straight over to a different guy just sitting at a table and stabbed him."

Mr Noah said there was an immediate commotion and the stabbed fan fell to the ground.

"A girl was screaming and police came running across to arrest the attacker as he ran away. They got him on the ground and got the handcuffs on him."

The Foreign Office in London confirmed that a British man had been killed but was unable to give any further information.

The stabbing happened off Rossio Square in the Portuguese capital, police spokeswoman Isabel Canelas said. She said the suspect, aged 31, was likely to appear in court later today charged with causing death by stabbing.

Briton stabbed on Algarve

A 19-year-old Briton is seriously injured in hospital after being stabbed in the neck with a sharp instrument, British and Portuguese authorities said.

The attack happened in Portimao on the Algarve in the early hours of this morning.

Police said he was involved in a fight, but it was not thought to be directly related to the Euro 2004 football tournament.

The incident comes 24 hours after England fan Stephen Smith, 28, of Wolverhampton, was stabbed to death in Lisbon.

A Foreign Office spokesman in Lisbon said: "Consular staff are visiting a British national who has been seriously injured in an incident in the early hours of this morning in Portimao."

Local police said the victim was 19. There had been a fight but it was not thought to have been directly related to the football.

Nobody has been arrested over the attack.

Portuguese police said the 19-year-old was stabbed in the neck.

It happened in the main avenue of Portimao on the Algarve at 4am.

The teenager was rushed to hospital but doctors have said he is out of danger.

Mario Olivera, a Portuguese police spokesman in Faro, said he was not sure whether the Briton was still in hospital. He said the incident was not football-related and was being dealt with by the police force which investigates violent street crime
