is there a way to tell if there have been any new replies to older threads?..if so maybey people would check those first before starting a new thread...

when someone replies to a thread new or old it gets bumped up top of the forum

you've probably noticed the 'email notification' checkbox at the bottom when you post replies too?

if you check that you'll get an email everytime someone replies in that thread after your post :)
