Ok,this is it.

I have got the Pro edition of Windows XP and want some answers.:wtf:

I have Windows ME installed on my PC but I want to change to XP,I do NOT have an ME disk as the software came installed on my PC.What I want to know is this,at any point during the XP installation process does the PC require you to format your hard drive? This might be a problem for me as if anything went wrong and it didn't install after formatting my HD then I wouldn't be able to re-install ME because the ME files are stored somewhere on my PC,I use them to reset my PC to factory defaults whenever it ****s up.

I can only use the files in conjunction with a recovery (floppy) disk that came with my PC,and if said XP installation formatted my HD and ****ed up I would lose the files from my PC and have no OS.:(

Well, you can upgrade to Windows XP Professional from Windows 98/ME/NT4/2000/XPHome (unlike WinXP Home which only upgrades from Win98/ME) so you don't have to wipe your hard drive.

Windows XP (both Home & Professional) has a simple and easy-to-understand installation. It also does not ask you for the disc if you have Windows ME installed.

I believe you can also retain some files so that you can "deupgrade" your Windows back to Windows XP if it fails.

So, you don't have to (but can) format your hard drive to use Windows XP.

[I recommend converting your drive to NTSF from FAT32 when you get the option - even though it's not DOS/Win9x supported - because it runs better and uses the space on your hard drive better too]

The only reason you would have to format the drive is if XP refused to do the upgrade. At the beiginning of the setup XP will ask if you want to upgrade (recommended) or Do a Fresh Installation. If you do a fresh install, then watch carefully (As you can miss this fairly easy) you can choose which drive and/or partition you wish to setp on. This involves deleting and making new partitions Blah Blah Blah, which if you are an inexpereinced user in that area then you're better off not playing around with it. Just use the "Upgrade feature and it'll do the rest. Once it's finished you'll have to choose a password and all that other crap, but it's pretty straight forward. All your stuff will be as it was only things will look different and it'll take some getting used to. --Hope that helps.
