Is there anyway u can enable the author of a thread to be able to close it him/herself?

If you are a mod then yeah, but for members no.

Pagan_Purity

He knows that. He was asking if we could do that.

Do you really think its appropriate for a mod to be making such a condescending and provocative reply?

anyway its not a bad idea but I don't think there's anyway to do it nor could I see it being allowed here.

Ah obviously no. :wtf:

Obviously? Geez, Madfog isn't dumb. Twas a good question.

And I thought it was a good idea, but we didn't decide to go down that path the last time I suggested it.

I actually think it would be a good idea for members to be able to close/delete there own threads until someone has posted, but it's unlikely to happen.

Thanks dierdry =0

Its Diedra

And yes, I do think it is a good idea. Especially if someone flames the thread. But, the bad side to it is random members having "the powers of God" so to speak and being allowed to close it if they get pissed off. I think as long as the mods still have the power to open them back up if need be, it wouldn't be a bad idea. :D

probably can, although i have never considered it for the reason that i don't like people creating threads and deleting them 5 minutes later, they can just as easily pm a mod and ask them to close it.

Alanakii
06-06-2005, 07:11 PM
That's true. Well i think that its a good idea in threory but i feel it will be eventually abused.

Pagan_Purity
06-06-2005, 07:18 PM
Quite possibly. But, I know people become pissed off when their thread is closed without their knowledge. Maybe a mod could pm them and let them know that they will close the thread if it continues to be flamed, leaving it up to the thread starter to try to remain on topic and salvage said thread.

Ah if i could understand what madfog is trying to say maybe i could have a better rebutle but i said memebers cannot open/close their own threads, i never said they shouldnt. Try again scott.

can't read

Quit your bellywaggling, kids. :D

Yes, it is possible. Never seen a place that'll allow it though. Dunno if the power to close your own threads extends to opening them back up again, which may be a problem if the thread really should stay closed.

@Alex: Yes it can be done somewhere under the VB Admin CP. I visit another VB powered gaming board and the closing of the thread can by the person that made it.

However I am a mod at this other place and I can open my own thread back up in an area of the board I don't moderate. I can also delete posts made by others in my own thread. As far as I am aware this can not be done by non staff members. I can get this tested if any of you want me to?

Eldandoerino

yea that would be helpful also what's your opinion of it as a mod? does it work? does it cause lots of problems? is it abused and do you have a hard time policing it?

It's the same for MOD's here they can open/close their own threads ,even in forums they don't moderate.

But I don't believe regular members need to be able to do it.

ok basicaly I got a non mod member to make a thread for me, she then told me that she could close the thread but also re open it. The area she posted I moderate, so I closed it and the asked her to see if it would alow her to re open it and she said yes I opened it again.....

I will be speaking to the board Admin later but and it will be the same thing for GG the new members wont know about the thread tool options. The only way to get round that is to move it to were threads carn't be edited and no posts can be made (pointless archives) or in the place I mod the black hole!

.. but of course if you weren't a Mod you'd be all for it. ;)

Nitrous

meh guess it depends if the staff here close the thread and move it to the pointless archive.
Some of the guys at the "other board" somtimes "forget" to move em but it has never been a problem for us and it's not like the n00bies know about the options like I said.

The way I see it is, it's the Mod's job to do that sorta stuff and if it gets to the stage normal members have to be able to close threads then it's a bad day...

When I first started posting here I was bothering Scott every few minutes to please delete my post or move it......I know it must have been annoying to him, but it worked and he took care of it....
