Ok ok, I know it's only been a few days but I've re-partitioned my hard drive and re-formatted. I dne it all by myself:D:p My dad told me what to do and I did it. I haven't got anything like as much programs installed yet but I have to find the CD's (wherever they are). I'm not going to install as much crap on the computer this time. Everythings going perfect, programs loading fast, Winzip doesn't slow the cursor down when I rest it over the toolbars anymore:D AOL loads about 4 times as quick:D Don't worry, I'll still come here like I used to

Your dad wouldn't like to explain it all to me would he? My computer is getting slower aanndd ssslllooowwweeerrr. I've put so much cr*p and so many programs on it over the years, and even when I uninstall most of them it doesn't seem to increase the amount of space on my hard disk.

Therefore I really need to do something drastic, but haven't a clue what to do!

If you've got one hard drive it would be a good idea to do a de-frag because virtual memory aka swapfile fragments the hard drive. But first empty all the temporary stuff and what you don't want. Then go to:
start
programs
accessories
system tools
and then click on disk defragmenter.
(remember to disable the screensaver and quit any programs that are running in the background) Choose the drive you want to defragment click settings, and check both boxes/circles. Click ok and away you go! I usually click show details, as this way you can see everything that is going on. What defragmenting will do is put all your files/programs at the start of the drive and fill in all the gaps, and puts sections of files together, my dad had a friend who didn't know what a de-frag was, he told him to do one, (he had his computer for about a year and never de-fragged!) and he said that his computer was doing stuff really fast:D
I don't know if it was worth me saying all that but if anyone doesn't know then they can read this:D:D:D

I hope this helps:wave:

It usually works, even worked on my piece of cr*p cpu. Give it a try, it will take about 1-10 hours, depends on how much you have on the hard drive (i think)

I believe mine took 2 hours. Just whack it on de-frag m8, then go out. When u come back, presto you will have a better pc, always something good to come back to.

Thanks for the suggestion. I do defrag every now and again, and infact I've just recently done it. It sure helps for a little while, not long tho!

On a slightly different matter my computer sometimes, for no apparant reason, switches itself off. Just suddenly will go 'clunk' and I get a blank screen and the whole think has just closed down. Has anyone else had this? Any ideas as to what might be causing it?

Mine is only a few gig and takes an hour or so to defrag. There are no noteable changes after either!! argh! :(
