Straight to it...

I bought a game called StarTopia yesterday. Installed it, played it, works fine.

Then it crashes. :(
And again.
And again.

So I look for a patch for the game. Find one.
I install it.
No crashes! :D
BUT, a few hours into the game, the sound starts to break up. Not a big deal, I think.
A minute or so later, my speakers erupt forth the sound of MASSIVE feedback along a cheesegrater, amplified about 4 times!:wtf::mad:

So I install a patch for the Patch I found.
I haven't played the game again yet, but if that doesn't work, I'd like to have a few questions answered:

1) Does anyone know of this game, and what the problem is? *

2) How can I find out the product names of my Graphics and Sound cards? I have not got the original packaging.

3) Having found the product names, where can I get updated DirectX 8 Drivers for them?

Thanks.

* - My PC's Specifications are WELL above the Required, AND Recommended, so it's not, I repeat, NOT, the PC Specs.

1) I have heard of this game - but not the problem - have you tried looking over at the manufacturers website?

2) Go to system properties (right click on My Computer and go to properties), then click the hardware tab and go to device manager. Here you can find out the names and what drivers your devices are using

3) Well you could try the manufacture's website and get drivers from them (which is the best, but sometimes not always possible), or Windows Update is good for getting new drivers. There are other sites (if you search in something like google) which can give you older drivers if you need them.

Tip: if the problem persists, try reinstalling the game - sometimes this can help.

Good luck m8. I know it's a good game (from PCGAMER review).

TBH, the first thing I tried was the My Computer -> Properties etc. But it doesn't seem to tell me anthing about my SoundCard other than "Creative SB AudioPCI (WDM)", and that's it. Oh, and it's version 002. :(

I'll try the game again in a bit, see if the patched Patch works.

This is exactly why I dont like PC's for playing games, having to patch a game is bad enough but when the patch needs a patch??

I'll stick to my consoles, one disk works on all.:P

Well, I played the game with the Patched Patch.
It didn't load. :(

So, I re-installed it. My PC crashed after I installed it.

I started to play it, and then the sound goes funny (as above, mut much sooner), and it crashes.

Now honestly, is this my Sound Card (only thing which seems to go wrong In-Game), DirectX 8 (no sound problems with DX7, but it still crashed) or something wlse wrong with my PC? :head:

Well, tht should be enough - mine's only listed as "Creative SB Live! (WDM)". From what you've got you should be able to get a driver from Creative.

OK, had a look round at Creative UK Driver section for you [ http://uk.europe.creative.com/support/drivers/welcome.asp ] and I think I found one. It's an ASP database - so I can't give you a direct link - but using the one above you should be able to get a driver. On the products list choose "SB PCI 64" - I think this is the right one, as it mentions the "AudioPCI" in the list of products that driver supports.

I hope it works for you m8.

I think the lack of a number threw me off. :(

I'll try it, and if it works, thanks. :thumb:

If not...

*Bump*

Err, it didn't work.

However, i have found out that my Sound Card is a " Creative SoundBlaster PCI 128".
I have some new drivers for it, but every time I run the programs, they crash! Any help?:wtf::mad:
