IN US, if potential for parole is stipulated, it is usually LIFE with the possibility of parole in 25. On lesder degree cases, good behavior getd ya out in seven. Perhaps that is what they are talking about. I am pb wrong as by the writing and language used, I believe them to be from the UK.

If this is a Project you are doing, what are your own Personal Views on the subject. Other people should not be expected to help you in your work. Same goes for your topic on the Death Sentence.
Nowadays, with our face of a judical system, life is roughly 30 years.
In my opinion life should mean life. Either that or start dishing out realistic sentences. Something like three years for raping a child? Sickens me. The judge should be shot too.

:thumb: I totally agree with you there Lupus. LIFE is LIFE..Until the inmate drops dead of natural causes or otherwise. No "time off for good behavior", that is a joke. Did they show their victims mercy?NO!!!!!! Now I am actually pro death penalty when it comes to raping a child, but there is no stipulation for that in the laws. Some guy in Reno , Nevada a few weeks ago actually did shoot his ex wife and the judge that heard the case..........I almost agree with the premise of Grisham's book.."A Time To Kill".......They raped his 10 year old daughter and the FATHER killed the *******s and was let off (only in a fiction novel but hey, not a bad thought).
:O ANd kid, I agree with Savannah..Your own opinions for your homework!! Learn to think for yourself!

Well it's all relative, 500 years ago 30 years was a life span.

I agree with what Loopy said... life should mean life.
Also if a sentence is given for 10 years then they should stay for 10 years, not be let out in 5. I think its the problem of not being enough room in the prisions because there sticking people in there for pettty crimes or speeding! I say cart them off to an island and dumb em there.... not like they can go anywhere then.

been there done that, now the convicts are beating us at rugby...
on a serious note, life should mean life...
if you are given a sentence, then you should serve that sentence.. a sentence should also reflect the severity of a crime...
these cretins who rape children are looking at less than 10 years..
its disgusting...
personally, castration would be a fitting punishment for pedos... no tools to commit the crimes then, and no deviant urges to fulfil...
the problem nowadays though, is that targets have to be met to make it look like the government is doing something about crime... so prisons have a revolving door on them, as the figures show that people are being put away, but the cost of sending them down is astronomical due to the cushy lifestyle they get inside...
so they are booted out as soon as they get put in under the excuse of "rehabilitation"...
whatever happened to deterrents?!?
lock em up and give them a blanket in a small room, and feed them the basic nourishments needed to survive.... give them 10 mins outside a day for excercise and then lock them back up in solitude...
no cable tv, no no pool tables, no gourment food and no possibility of learning how to commit new crimes...
that way, we can afford more prisons, and lock people away for the sentences they deserve...
criminals should be treated as criminals, as they give up their human rights when they decide to violate those who they have commited crimes against....

;) But in the here and now...Hell, did they even have tribunals, courts, etc that imposed jail 500 years ago? I thought everyone was killed back then...

It seems like you guys don't appreciate the length of these sentences. You make it sound like 5 years is nothing, but I can't imagine being in prison for even a month, let alone dozens of them.
Being robbed of so many freedoms for so long, realising how much time was lost afterwards, then being continously judged afterwards. Oh, we don't want you to live in our neighbourhood, even if it was a terrible lapse of judgement within a split-second of passion and overwhelming emotion.
Of course, there are people who took the time to plan their crimes. Maybe they should burn.

Exactaly.
Everyone here has got an opinion on jail but has anyone other than myself here actualy spent any time in a jail?
I severly doubt it.
Life should equal life
Look people life is the term the justice departments of the world used to describe the maximum amount of time that a person can spend in prison, it does not mean until you die. In some countries it might be 20 years some 25 and others might be 30 or more.
If the court wants that they can issue consecutive life sentences, which happens quite alot and that person would spend the rest of his life behind bars.
Being robbed of so many freedoms for so long,
In an age where prisons get libraries, gyms, recreation thngs, TV, better food than I have, I have to bring issue to this particular point.
Anyway, you have to agree that three years for raping a child is pathetic.

Lmao, that is laughable.
You're telling me that if you asked a prisoner if he wanted ' libraries, gyms, recreation thngs, TV, better food than I have' or freedom, he would say ,'hell no I want to stay in prison for all it's creature comforts'?
You're an idiot.
I think most of you have no idea what a prison is for, you think its a cage where criminals get put so they cant hurt anyone. That is it's superficial use, what a prison is realy for is so that people who have made mistakes and broken the law can have a chance to recognise their mistakes and the consequences they caused and to try and be a better person when they come out.
Since the recorded time thousands of murders have been released form prison to go and lead productive law abiding lives, acording to you lot they should have been executed and never given another chance.
I just hope people are as unforgiving to you sometime in your life and you might understand how it feels to be not given a chance for redemtion.
Um.
Life is life.
25 is 25.
:wtf:
Perhaps you should know what you are talking about before you go using the 'umm' word and using the WTF smiley in a patronising manner.

True, but the point is that there is still a lot they can not do. Travel, go to the local pub or restaurant, make your own choices regarding your living space (by which I mean decorating), bowl, work for income worth putting in savings, be involved in hetero romance, have pets, gambling at a casino or the pony races, or pretty much anything which is not provided for them because they have to be in one place for so long.
Anyway, you have to agree that three years for raping a child is pathetic.
Once again, that does sound like a long time to me. It could be longer, obviously, but I wouldn't go as far to say that it is "pathetic".
Mind you, I haven't been raped. Feel free to throw that in my face.

DON'T DO THE CRIME IF YOU DON'T HAVE THE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wah, I was in jail, wah, it was bad, wah, no freedom. Think of that BEFORE you break the law. I do, however, agree with the punishment fitting the crime. In the scenario Lupus refers to about raping a child, 3 years in an insanely small amount of time. There was a lady who recently just got 3 years for having her 4 yr. old steal money from a fire departments collection jar, the total "take" $1.85. SHE CLAIMED SHE NEEDED $ for gas, however, in fact, she was a heroin addict. I think the 3 years is harsh there..rehab, yes, three years hard..Nah!

The three strikes thing is in LA also. A bit harsh. I mean life for possession? Talmon might know..I think though, it counts when even misdemeanors are involved...But a killer will be out in 7 years for 2nd degree manslaughter..Not right!
