Okay so I have heard nothing but good about the RE games so I've decided to try them out. Naturally I want to start at the beginning. I've recently come into possession of Resident Evil 1 but it won't run on my XP system; I get a pop-up saying that it needs win95.

Program Compatibility Wizard doesn't work, about the only improvement it makes is that instead of that pop-up I get the blank red setup screen and it gets stuck there.

So how do I run this thing, other than installing win95 onto my system? Some emulator? My one operating system is already volatile enough on its own without my help and without another operating system alongside.

Any suggestions for a quick fix?

I suppose I can just play it on my old computer that runs win98 but I sort of don't want to hook/unhook it everytime I want to play this one game.

If all else fails I can just start in on a newer RE game, I suppose.

Try this.

Install it, go to the "Resident Evil" link in the start menu and Right click
it, select properties. Click "compatibility" and then run it in
"compatibility mode".. Win 95 should do.

or this

There is a little trick which can be done to get RE1 working under xp or newer systems. Don't click the setup icon, click launch icon with the picture of rebecca on it, making sure you have selected 95 compatibility mode. Even though it comes up with and error if you bring up task manager and end the error task, it will ask you what graphics card to choose. Now you need to do this very quickly before it ends the task, quickly choose the first graphics card then select ok, after that quickly choose the directory you want to install to, wholaa! the game installs. :)

Personally I wouldn't bother for a game as old as RE.

If you really want to play this game on XP, I think the 2 best options might be:

1. Install Windows 95 in some kinda virtual machine, and then install the game in that.

2. Even better, buy the PS1 game for a fiver or something, get a USB joypad and play it through an emulator, epsxe is a good choice.
