Any tips for consistant play?(up skill)Halo 3

I am kinda stuck. I am only good 1/2 of the game. I will either be dominating guys at a higher skill than me and shoot up to like 13 kills in Lone Wolves or I will stay at 0-4 then when I hear "5 MINUTE REMAINING" I will go straight to 14-17 kills. For some reason I can only be good 1.2 of the game play so do any of you guys know of any trait, hints or tricks to help improve my game play? Keep in mind I have just had my 360 a month.

Also you need to imagine that your life depends on how you play.
BE the character don't hand out kills willy nilly by being a jackass.

Play tactically, use cover, learn your best weapons combos and be a beast.

Sure it's a double-post, but by God this forum needs life.

Don't learn the game in Lone Wolves!
I've had a look at their ranking system, and it's complicated. But basically if you lose a lot when you're first starting out it becomes a lot harder to rank up later on.
Some players have even gone to the extreme of making a new account just so their personal rating didn't get absolutely shafted.

I'm not that desperate, however.
Yet.
