The following is a copy of a news artical from Gamespot.

Environmentally inclined campaigning group asks gamers to insist that console manufacturers take action.

The organisation is looking at the consoles themselves, and it doesn't like what it sees. In a statement on its Web site, Greenpeace said, "In gamespace, everybody wants to save the world. But back here on planet Earth, games consoles contain deadly agents of real destruction: toxic chemicals that shouldn't be there."

Greenpeace has set up a site called Clash of the Consoles, featuring Master Chief, Kratos, and Mario, to compare their respective systems' Earth-friendliness. The site aims to educate gamers and encourages them to write game manufacturers to insist that they adopt "greener" practices.

I'll be the first to reply then, I do.

Computer parts and electronic gadgets in general contain various heavy metals and dangerous chemicals that shouldn't be getting in to our earth and seeping in to our water tables.

Over here we have eco-waste days where people drop off their electrical goods at a depot and the resulting rubbish is then broken down to a less harmful state and disposed of properly, or in some cases recycled.

Makes common sense really.

I care too.

The most noticeable thing is the power consumption increase of consoles over the years and the introduction of standby. I have both a Wii and Xbox 360 and it annoys me that that the is no proper off switch on them - short of pulling out the plug.

I don't like two things about that video (and, in turn, this subject).

1. If they're trying to appeal to gamers, they shouldn't try to make Kratos sound like a dumbass, Mario like a pansy, and Master Cheif like Beavis or Butthead (I forget which is which sometimes). Mario doesn't poop out mushrooms!

2. Okay, maybe making the consoles has some environmental backlash. I don't know if it is true/false, I concede. But consoles don't get thrown away. They get resold and resold for decades. If one stops working, it gets refurbished, or the parts become retro clothing accesories.

Although, I must admit that after a lifetime of lectures about not wasting power, I sometimes wonder about the evils of leaving a console inactively on.
