View Full Version : GTA4 a bit crap really?

Am I the only one that after completing GTA4 found the overall game to be... well a bit crap?

Let's start with the city itself. Yeah it is massive and glorious to behold but did anyone else get the impression that in the grand scheme their just wasn't a great deal to be done in the city? GTA SA in the first local you could steal someone bicycle go BMXing grab a car and then go hold up the train and steal it. Iin GTA4 you couldn't do any of that.

I dunno maybe it's move to a more realistic look meant it lost some of it's character but the new Liberty City was missing something that made the cities of GTA3, VC and SA more fun to drive around.

The missions themselves. I started to notice a recurring and some what annoying theme in the general mission structure. Go to location, fight through building killing lots of bad guy, reach target, watch as target runs away, chase target. The only issue with this is. The target / cover system at first seems okay but in reality it was so badly badly flawed.

Example 1, shooting someone through a doorway with a door in it. Walk through door, step back to get cover, watch as door closes and you are no longer able to shoot and have to break cover to open the door again.

Example 2, Shooting through doorway with no door at a guy who is directly on the other side. Guy steps through the doorway so he is on your side, you can no longer target him unless you break cover. By which time you've had half your health blown away.

Example 3, This happens in a few later missions in which you fight your way through only for enemies to mysteriously spawn behind you. They start shooting you and you can't find them or shoot back because the cover system doesn't allow you to look round or target them.

Example 4, You try to shoot an enemy using the blind fire system only to find that it just won't fire because your not standing EXACTLY flush with the edge of whatever you're using for cover. This happens with both blind and targeted fire.

Now you add all this and find that you've managed to some how fight your way through to your target only to find that instead of standing ground and having a fire fight he's decided to run away which now brings you in to the horrible horrible driving whilst shooting.

To be honest this aspect got beyond annoying, fight your way through a tough building only to lose out because of the terminally poor shooting whilst driving system.

The general problem is that this game seems to have lost that cheeky quirky GTA fun. The radio stations where boring with totally unforgettable music, their where no quirky fun missions, anyone remember the remote control planes in GTA SA? In stead GTA4 went for the same, go to location, shoot lots of bad guys, chase someone down structure.

All I know is that with each of the previous GTA games once I had completed then it was possible for me to spend hours just d*cking around in the city achieving nothing just messing about out running cops and causing mayhem I can't really see me doing that with GTA4.

Yes, and I despised that mission.

Yes, and I despised that mission.

I couldn't agree more.

I was glad GTA4 didn't include any annoying remote control missions.

I enjoyed GTA4, I agree with some of the comments made by LM, but over all i enjoyed the game and I am still enjoying it.

You know you CAN shoot the doors, thereby moving them and allowing you to shoot through the now-vacant doorway...

Also what fool hijacks a train? Why?

Actually you can't, yes you can shoot them but to do so you have to break cover and expose your character to attack but try shooting the door from a covered position located right next to the door. The character just refuses to shoot unless he happens to have a target locked that's on the other side of the door.

End of the day it's something that's annoying and didn't need to be included and that's the issue I am finding with GTA4 that there are a lot of really annoying things in it that detract significantly from the overall game.

Also what fool hijacks a train? Why?

It's not weather you want to or need to it's just that the ability to do so is there it's open ended allowing you to do what you want.

Don't aim with lock-on then.

Don't aim with lock-on then.

If you use the free aim then all he does is stand there doing nothing whilst you sit there holding the fire button. The free aim + cover doesn't work unless you are standing RIGHT next to the edge of the wall. The second you put a door there he can't shoot.

Agreed some of the comments are true but don't really hinder the game at all. All in all GTA4 was a lot similar and easier then the previous couple of GTA but thankfully there were no really annoying levels like the remote control planes or the one where you had to fly the airplane yourself but keep under the rader.

It does feel like they have reeled things a lot in this one to make it seem more like a real city there are some things that are missing and some of laughing mans comments are right but i still love it, one thing i would like if it can be done via downloadable content is more weapons.

If your talking about when you had to pilot the full size jet fighter, I liked that one, admittedly it was fecking hard and a challenge, but isnt that the idea behind games, to make them a challenge?

I can't stand games with an unchangeable difficulty level that a retarded 8 year old (or phatbowser) could complete, although I mostly like them, the FF are a bit guilty of this sometimes.

Admittedly there is a fine line between a challenge and annoying, the zero missions definitely fall into the latter category though.

On the flip side the flying missions in SA were very hard, but I enjoyed the challenge and I didnt get an annoyance factor.
