View Full Version : Downtime
Welcome back everyone!
At approximately 5:45 EST on May 31, 2008 a short in a high-volume wire conduit caused a transformer in the H1 data center in Houston, TX (where our server is housed) to explode and catch fire knocking out 3 walls in the electrical room. Power and all generators were shut down as instructed by the fire marshal. Underground wiring was badly damaged and needed repair before the first floor could be powered on again thus giving us the long downtime. Thankfully no networking equipment or servers were damaged during this incident. Unfortunately all the servers in the data center were down for hours and the servers on this first floor were down for over 48 hours while the transformer and data center damages were repaired. The issue is now resolved and we’re resuming normal operations. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
Right now we are running on a generator until the new power equipment arrives. There will be a downtime either June 7th or June 14th (midnight) and will last for about 4 hours. The downtime will be for the power changeover. Please stay tuned to this thread for further info by Scarface or myself.
Thanks!
Adam

Where do bad servers go when they die? They don't go to heaven where the angels fly
They go to the lake of fire and fry, won't see them again 'till the 4th of July.
This fire is out of control!

Edit: From what I've seen on another affected site, it looks like some lovely complaints are headed their way... :)
Not that I necessarily agree with the actual complaint, mind you, not knowing much about it. Adam, you say you work at the company where the server was/is?
At least it doesn't look like very much data was lost, if any. Praise be that my art is still here.

Nope, I do not work there. It's in Texas, I'm in NC. Yea, they are going to face a lot of legal trouble I'm sure. Not for the fact that the generator blew up (it can happen anywhere) but for the lack of updates during the downtime and no notice was given to customers. They had to find out why their server was down by actually looking for the answers.
