Just completed the game. I am still undecided on the overall outcome. From the encounter with Vamp at the end of Act 4 the entire game went quite rapidly down hill. I hated that the whole concept of sneaking got thrown out of the window and it essentially became a third person shooter. Really there must have been all of about 30 seconds of potential sneaking.
I also found the amount of actual game play to be rather short after this point. Loads of extended cutscenes with very little actual gameplay. Really after you kill Vamp the gameplay can be summed up as follows.
Becomes shoot loads and loads of things and walk down a few corridors before the long and over done CQC fight with Liquid. Then 90 minutes of mostly pointless cut scenes.
The wedding was pointless but I guess gave the cuddly warm feeling of folk just going on with life and I dunno why they just didn't stick with making the viewer think Snake and shot himself. The whole thing with Zero and Big Boss was nonsense loose ends tying, it felt life the design team were trying to put as many final nails in the sagas coffin as possible. The whole last 30 to 40 minute cut scene was their way of saying NO MORE METAL GEAR, THAT'S IT.
Weird everything up to the end of Act 4 was brilliant everything after that was annoying

Loads of extended cutscenes...
that's a pretty traditional aspect of MGS games.

Indeed but in general terms they were off set by having longer, or at least more involved actual game play bits in between. In this one there were actual bits where you would view a five minute cut scene, do something daft or simple like run down a corridor or shoot one of the defeated bosses and then you'd be watching another five minute cut scene. It got real bad after Act 4.

Well it was the final game in a seven game-long series with plenty of loose ends to tie up there was always gonna be alot of cutscenes even for for MG. Personally I thought everything was done rather well and all the story sloted together pretty well.
Well they used nanomachines as a excuse a little to often it didn't really take anything away from the game. The wedding wasn't really pointless people generally like to know what happens to each character at the end of the game and afterwards which is always better then leaving you guessing or feeling disappointed.

Yeah true I guess the wedding wasn't too bad but it still felt a bit out of the blue the way it came about. I have however had a wee think about the ending and have come to the conclusion that everything after the scene that looks like Snak shoots himself was pointless. In effect everything up to then WAS tied up.
Snake was now dead
Zero would have been to old to still be alive
Big Boss, well you saw him die at the end of act 3
Then the 'real' Big Boss comes along and undoes everything, then spends 30 minutes explaining how everything is now tied up before spending about 10 minutes dying.... uh everything already WAS tied up until he re-appeared.
I suppose the big shocker was given that everyone knew it was the last MGS everyone expected Snake to die at the end. Everything we saw was of an old, ill Snake barley getting through and then at the end of Act2 you get told that you pretty much HAVE to die. Turning that round so that Snake didn't die was actually more surprising although to simply say the mutated virus had mutated again was a bit of an easy cope out.
The game was good everything up tp the End of Act 4, including that bitching fight between Rex and Ray was pure Gold, I just wish the last two Acts had been less run and gun, less cut scene... or at least more game play.

Just finished myself, and have to agree with you on a few points there, act three was wicked i was enjoying running around the streets then all of sudden wham there was a load of cuts scenes and it came up end of act three and i though **** that's not much actual play time in that act never mind though maybe 4 will be longer, then 4 ended and i thought well it was a bit longer but still it wasn't that long maybe act 5 is gonna be massive as you sneak your way though that huge ship but no as you said it was short as **** which left me feeling slight robbed.
I finished the game about 5.20 and the ending is still going like you i think i would have been happy for snake to die in fact he should have died a few times now (the fighting and getting shot/the radiation in gw/shooting himself to stop fox die) i thought fox die was a perfect way for snake to have to die would have been good.
Having said all that it was awesome i enjoyed it more than I've enjoyed a game for a long time, also thought the flash back in act 4 were one of the most powerful things I've experienced in a game as they were happening all these great memories from the first game came flooding back pure nostalgia.

I enjoyed the game and its telling of an epic story, i didnt like the ending cutscene. Yes it was good to wrap it all up but they could of done it without making us sit through nearly 40mins worth of footage. :(
