Default utorrent/slow net

I have this curious thing where if I have utorrent running then my browsing drops to a crawl and sometimes a stand still.

I know what your all thinking, its because utorrent is using all the bandwidth to download, but its not a bandwidth issue, even if I stop all the downloads/uploads so that utrrent is open but not downing or upping my browsing is still rubbish.

If I close utorr, usual browsing service resumes.

I find this more of an issue on my xp machine.

And it didnt used to do this, I suspect it happened after one of these "updates" they foist upon you.

Anyone had a similar problem/know of a solution?

EDIT:
I had to close utorr, to be able to successfully make this post ....

You can limit the amount of connections in utorr itself, but it seems to make little difference what value I set.

my MSN connection also fails periodically with utorr running.

Weird, well if you're shutting off downloading and uploading, you may as well not run utorrent anyways. Does your firewall tell you what sort of traffic's going through? Maybe downgrade to an older version.

If you had not already said you have stopped the uploads/downloads I would have said it's your upstream saturating your connection.

What version of uTorrent are you using?
Do you use a router?
Does CPU usage spike while uTorrent is open?

Quick google search showed a thread on the uTorrent support forums with these suggestions:

- Ran the Speed Guide (Ctrl+G in µTorrent) properly?
- Disabled IP resolving in the Peers tab?
- Restarted µTorrent after disabling DHT?
- Try disabling UPnP?
- What firewall are you using, and have you tried uninstalling it?
- Tried lowering the global maximum number of connections to 200? 100? 50?
- Lowering net.max_halfopen to 4?
- Patched TCPIP.SYS and restarted the computer after patching (this assumes you run Windows XP w/SP2!)?
- Restarted the router after doing any of the above?
- Connect directly to the modem to make sure it's not your router?
- If turns out that it's not the router, what modem are you using?

Yeah I found that page, tried all those things. And it was admittedly a little better afterwards, but I think ill just have to live with it.

Or try another torrent client.

I have switched back to the original bittorrent client and it seems to have sold my problem.

Incidentally the bitorrent client looks exactly the same as utorrent ...
